Periodontics

During your first consultation at Smith Family Dental, your gums will be evaluated for periodontal (gum) disease and infections of the bone. These diseases are often painless and patients don’t even know they have them. Any bleeding of the gums is not normal and should be professionally treated. Gum disease can affect the entire body by bacteria from the mouth getting into the blood stream, and traveling throughout the body. Gum disease can affect different organs of the body, such as the heart, liver, and even the unborn fetus of a mother. If left untreated, gum disease can also cause tooth loss and an excessive buildup of plaque and decay. The mildest form of gum disease is called gingivitis, and can be reversed with proper cleanings. Advanced gingivitis or periodontitis, may require additional treatments.

Periodontal Therapy

We perform periodontal oral health maintenance with probing, scaling and root planning when needed.

Arestin

This is a local antibiotic to fight periodontal disease.
